Stars shine at Haiti benefit

ENGLEWOOD — A benefit for Haiti earthquake relief on Sunday evening featuring
stars from Broadway, the New York Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Opera is
expected to raise about $100,000, according to organizers.
Every cent will help the ravaged nation because the cost of the event, held at the Bergen Performing Arts Center, was underwritten by 11 churches, nine synagogues and a mosque in Teaneck. Organizers said this was the first time the houses of worship banded together for a major philanthropic event.
"This is a loaves and fishes story," said the Rev. Eileen Lindner, pastor of the Presbyterian Church at Tenafly and a key organizer of the "Sending Our Love to Haiti" benefit. "There will be an enduring contribution to Haiti, and an enduring contribution to our sense of community."
More than 1,000 tickets were sold. Silent and live auctions of items valued at $40,000 — including sports memorabilia, jewelry and services — were held before the concert.
